Stauroneis Ehrenberg

Description

Frustules biraphid, symmetrical to the apical and transapical axes, valves elliptical (smaller specimens of some species) to lanceolate, striae distinctly or indistinctly punctate, axial area usually narrow. Central area composed of the thickened central nodule being expanded to or nearly to the valve margin. Pseudosepta may be present in some species, evident at the apices.

Some species of Navicula have expanded central areas or pseudosepta and therefore may be mistaken for Stauroneis.
