Typified with the type of Patrick’s subgenus. Basionym of generic name: Navicula subg. Decussata Patrick 1959 in Notulae naturae of the Acad. Nat. Sc. Philadelphia, 324: 4. Patrick states that her subgenus includes N. decussata, the type of Navicula group decussata Grunow [in Cleve & Grunow 1880 K. Sv. Vet.-Akad. Handl. 17(2), p. 47], but she typifies her subgenus with N. placenta which is a more common species. Navicula Gruppe Decussata Cleve & Grunow 1880, p. 47 (ref. 000241) : 2 species are mentionned Pleurosigma angulatum, and N. placenta. N. placenta is definitely included, unclear (not knowing German) if P. angulatum is included. It looks like Patrick erroneously stated that the type of Navicula group Decussata is N. decussata. Patrick subgenus should be cited Navicula subgen. Decussata (Cleve & Grunow) Patrick. Probably the authorship of the genus Decussata should be cited Decussata (Cleve & Grunow) H. Lange-Bertalot. Assuming that Navicula group Decussata originally included 2 species (syntypes), Patrick may be the author of the lectotypification of the group. There is a possibility that the generic name is invalid because the basionym was not properly cited by Lange-Bertalot. Although Art. 33 allows for some errors in citation of the basionym, I am not sure they apply here.Need to review all this information. Check with ina. |
