Comments This name was first introduced as subgenus of Frustulia in Kützing 1834 (1833) (ref. 000594), p. 556 (p. 28 of reprint), four species were included, Frustulia olivacea Kütz., F. lyngbyei Kütz., F. bidentata Kütz. and F. paludosa Kütz. In 1844 (ref. 000595), Kützing had a slightly different use of Sphenella (as a genus): he placed olivaceum in Gomphonema (p. 85), while under Sphenella (described p. 83) he placed 7 species, retaining out of the four species originally in the subgenus Sphenella only Stylaria paludosa (with a new name Sphenella vulgaris). The name was rejected vs. Gomphonema in ICBN 1956 (ref. 006916), p. 200; the name was no longer rejected in the subsequent codes. Sphenella Kützing was treated as a nom. rej. vs. Gomphonema because at the time (1956) Gomphonema was conserved as of Hustedt 1930; it became a possible later taxonomic synonym when the place of publication of the conserved name was taken back to Ehrenberg 1832 (ICBN 1961, ref. 006910).

Comments In Ehrenberg 1840 (ref. 000293) p. 217, the name Tabellaria is introduced with the Latin description of 2 species, Tabellaria ? amphicephala, Tabellaria trinodis, and the citation of Tabellaria bacillum (no description but reference to a previously published paper). No type is designated. It is not validly published in Ehrenberg 1840 because a generic description is lacking. The genus name became validly published in Kützing 1844, pg. 127 (ref. 000595), where a description of the genus is given. Seven species of Tabellaria are included in Kützing 1844 (including T. flocculosa, the first of them), no type is designated. Tabellaria flocculosa is given by Kützing 1844 as a possible synonym of Tabellaria trinodis Ehrenberg. Although this species may be the only one of Ehrenberg's original species included by Kützing in the genus, Kützing does not designate it as the type. Farr et al. (1979) and Round, Crawford & Mann (1990) are incorrect when giving T. flocculosa as the type. Boyer's choice of Tabellaria fenestrata is in accordance to ICBN Art. 10.2, has priority over Farr et al. (1979)'s choice, and should be followed.
