Comments Genus described in German in Ehrenberg 1837. Two species are listed (but not described): Cocconeis scutellum (N.G.) and C. undulata (n. sp.), no type is originally designated. SVL incorrectly gives Ehrenberg 1838 (ref. 000288) p. 193 as the original publication (in this publication 6 species are described: C. scutellum, C. undulatum, C. placentula, C. pediculus, C? finnica, C? clypeus). See also Cleve 1895 (ref. 000949) p. 168 who introduced the subgenus Cocconeis (Ehr.) Cleve. Cleve discussed the group Cocconeis-Achnanthes p. 164 and proposed to divide this group into several subgenera, one of them is Cocconeis (Ehr.) Cleve. The genus name is validly published in ref. 000285, however the species names were published the following year (ref. 000288).

Comments ING (1996) indicates that a reprint of ref. 000285 was published in 1836, in which the genus was described p. 22. This reprint (that we have not seen) would therefore constitute the original publication of the generic name. The name Podosphenia, as well as the combination Podosphenia nana also appeared in Ehrenberg 1836 (ref. 002226), p. 56, as nomina nuda (no description or illustration given). Genus Podosphenia is described in Ehrenberg 1837 (ref. 000285), p. 173; no species are originally included. Also described in Ehrenberg 1838, p. 213 (ref. 000288), where 4 species are included, but no type is designated. See also Ehrenberg 1838 (ref. 000288), p. 215 (" Nachtrag zur Gattung Podosphenia").

Comments Name rejected vs. its taxonomic synonym Rhabdonema Kutzing (nom. cons.) (see ICBN 1956, p. 201, ref. 006916). Originally monotypic. ING (1996) indicated the existence of a 1836 reprint (not seen by us) of this article on which the genus is described p. 23.
