Biblarium C.G. Ehrenberg 1843, p. 47
Generitype T: Biblarium glans (Ehrenberg) Ehrenberg 1843 (= Navicula glans Ehrenberg 1838)
Designated by ICBN 1994 (ref. 006916), p. 123
Year Designated 1994
Nomenclatural status nom. rej.
Recent revisions Williams 1986 (ref. 006884)
Comments Name rejected vs. Tetracyclus Ralfs 1843 (taxonomic synonym) Reference given in SVL (Ehrenberg1844, p. 265, ref. 001185) is erroneous, this is not the original publication of this genus but citation of the species "Biblarium ? gibbum. In Ehrenberg 1843 (ref. 001183) 9 species are listed, no generitype is designated. It seems, however, that all these species with the exception of B. glans are nomina nuda (not described), which would make B. glans (new combination of Navicula glans Ehrenberg 1838) the type (by monotypy). Otherwise, pre-rejection lectotypification with B. glans is effected by Ross in Farr et al. (1979), p. 200 (ref. 006663).

Pinnularia C.G. Ehrenberg 1843, pg. 45
Generitype T: Pinnularia viridis (Nitzsch) Ehrenberg (= Bacillaria viridis Nitzsch, 1817) (type conserved)
Designated by ICBN 1956 (ref. 006916), p. 201
Year Designated 1956
Nomenclatural status nom. cons.

Comments Name conserved with a conserved type vs. Pinnularia Lindl. & Hutton [Foss.] (nom. rej.) and Stauroptera Ehrenberg 1843 (nom. rej., taxonomic synonym) (see ICBN 1956, p. 201, ref. 006916). Name first introduced in Ehrenberg 1840, p. 213 (ref. 000293) as a subgroup within the genus Navicula, with several species listed in alphabetic order as Navicula (Pinnularia) aspera...etc., no type is designated. The name however was not validly published as a subgenus in Ehrenberg 1840 for lacking a description while including more than one species. In Ehrenberg 1843 (ref. 001183) Pinnularia is treated as a genus, 3 species are listed (P. viridis, P. viridula, P. gastrum) and no type is designated.

Comments No formal description in Ehrenberg but a diagram that can replace a description. 2 species mentioned: S. phoenicenteron, S. angusta, no generitype designated. Hanna (unpubl. ms.) gives a different reference: Stauroneis Ehrenberg, Abh. Akad. Wiss. Berlin, 1841 [1843], p. 134 (or op. cit. p. 422).

Comments Name rejected vs. Pinnularia Ehrenberg 1843 (nom. cons., taxonomic synonym)(see ICBN 1956, p. 201, ref. 006916). Originally monotypic: Stauroptera semicruciata Ehr. (p. 44). There is no illustration, and no formal description of the genus Stauroptera, but a diagram (in German) of comparison between genera Navicula, Pinnularia, Stauroneis, and Stauroptera, that may be equivalent to a description. Several species are included in Ehrenberg 1843, p. 135 (ref. 000294). Hanna (unpubl. ms.) gives a different reference: Stauroptera Ehrenberg, Abh. Akad. Wiss. Berlin, 1841 [1843], p. 134, and indicates that several species were included in the genus. (not verified by us).

Recent revisions Williams and Round 1987 (#003171)
Comments Farr et al. (1979) give authorship as above. SVL gives authorship as Ehrenberg 1843, p. 424 (ref. 000294). Round, Crawford & Mann 1990, p. 354, incorrectly give authorship as Staurosira (C.G. Ehrenberg) D.M. Williams & F.E. Round 1987 (Diat. Res. 2:272) (ref. 003171). This name seems to have first appeared in Ehrenberg 1841 (ref. 001180), p. 144, as a nomen nudum; 2 species were listed p. 144, Staurosira construens and Staurosira pinnata, but no descriptions were given either for the genus or for the species. In Ehrenberg 1843 (ref. 001183) p. 45 there is a discussion in German about the genus Staurosira (and other genera), which qualifes as a description; 2 species are listed on p. 44: Staurosira construens and Staurosira trigongyla, and no type is designated. In Ehrenberg 1843 (ref. 000294) p. 424 (136 of reprint) there are Latin descriptions for Staurosira amphilepta, Staurosira construens, and Staurosira pinnata. In this paper Staurosira was not part of the section starting p. 112, describing new genera. These observations are somewhat inconsistant with Williams and Round (1987) stating: "Ehrenberg described three species belonging to Staurosira before giving a description of the genus. However, later when he described Staurosira, he referred only "construens" to it, thus making it the generitype. Ehrenberg's generic description was brief and dealt with the distinctive shape of Staurosira construens: Testula minima, laevis, angulis productis, duobus oppositis longioribus tenuioribus" (this actually is word for word the description of S. amphilepta in Ehrenberg 1843, ref. 000294). It it not clear which 2 papers Williams and Round are referring to, they seem to be perhaps ref. 001183 and ref. 000294. Staurosira construens seems to have been first figured in Ehrenberg 1854 (ref. 000966)(Mikrog., pl. 5, II. fig. 23; pl. 16, I, fig. 23; pl. 39, III, fig. 110, etc.).
