Comments Name conserved vs. Dendrella Bory (nomenclatural synonym) and Diomphala Ehrenberg 1843 (taxonomic synonym) (see ICBN 1956, p. 200, ref. 006916). Introduced as a new genus (pl. 214, fig. 103: Didymosphenia n.g. sibirica) but later in the text seems to be considered a subgenus of Gomphonema: "Das neue Subgenus von Gomphonema ist durch das in beiden Endknoten scharf nach derselben Seite abbiegende Ende der Raphe immer deutlich gekennzeichnet" (this new subgenus of Gomphonema is characterized by the unilaterally curved ends of the raphe). Three species are originally included, D. sibirica (Grun.) M. Schmidt, D. curvirostrum (Temp. & Brun) M. Schmidt, and D. geminata (Lyng.) M. Schmidt, and no type is designated. Didymosphenia is also a nomenclatural synonym of Gomphonema Agardh (nom. rej.). Pre-conservation lectotypification with D. geminata in ICBN 1952, p. 70 (ref. 006915) and Taxon 1: 95-97. July 1952 (ref. 006922).

Comments Type by monotypy. Fragilaria castracanei De Toni 1892 (ref. 000950) p. 687 is a new name given by De Toni to replace Fragilaria antarctica Castracane 1886 (non Schwartz 1877). Medlin & Sims 1993 (ref. 006582) transferred Pseudo-eunotia doliolus, the type of Pseudo-eunotia Grunow in Van Heurck 1881, to genus Fragilariopsis. Because Pseudo-eunotia predates Fragilariopsis, Fragilariopsis would become illegitimate (as later nomenclatural synonym of Pseudo-eunotia) by the inclusion of Pseudo-eunotia doliolus , unless Fragilariopsis is conserved against Pseudo-eunotia. Such conservation has not been formally proposed yet.

Generitype LT: P. peruvianus (Kitton ex Ralfs) A. Schmidt (= Eupodiscus? peruvianus Kitton ex Ralfs)

Comments Two species are illustrated in Schmidt's Atlas: Pseudauliscus radiatus (J.W. Bailey 1854) A. Schmidt (pl. 34 fig. 28) and Pseudauliscus peruvianus (Kitton ex Pritchard 1861) A. Schmidt (pl. 34 fig. 29), no type designated; there is also no indication that this is a new genus. Round, Crawford & Mann (1990), p. 699, give P. radiatus Bailey as the type, and P. peruvianus as the type, p. 226, which might invalidate their typification. This genus name was validly published in Schmidt's Atlas because the short comments in the plate caption qualifies as a diagnosis ("Zu Pseudauliscus recline ich alle Auliscen ohne sculpturlose Area"). Leuduger-Fortmorel 1879, p. 64 (ref. 000606) considered this genus invalidly published by Schmidt and proposed a validating description.
