Amphora C.G. Ehrenberg ex F.T. Kützing 1844, p. 107
Generitype LT: Amphora ovalis (Ehrenberg) Kützing 1844 (= Navicula amphora C.G. Ehrenberg)
Designated by Boyer, C.S.(000946), p. 253
Year Designated 1927
Nomenclatural status valid
Recent revisions Mann 1994 (ref. 006888)
Comments The name first appeared in Ehrenberg 1840 (ref. 000293), p. 205, with description of 4 species, but is invalidly published for lacking a generic description. Also appears in Ehrenberg 1841 (ref. 002001) in lists of diatoms p. 203, 204, 205, 207, but it is not validly published here because no descriptions or illustrations are given. Valid publication is in Kützing 1844 (ref. 000595), where a Latin description is given (p. 107). Kützing describes 18 species but does not designate a generitype. Round, Crawford & Mann (1990) (p. 683) state: "The type of the genus is Navicula amphora C.G. Ehrenberg. Amphora ovalis (Kützing) Kützing (Frustulia ovalis Kützing) is a taxonomic but not a nomenclatural synonym."

Campylodiscus C.G. Ehrenberg ex F.T. Kützing 7/9 Nov 1844, pg. 59
Generitype LT: Campylodiscus clypeus (C.G. Ehrenberg) C.G. Ehrenberg ex Kützing (= Cocconeis clypeus C.G. Ehrenberg 1838)
Designated by Boyer, C.S.(000946), p. 548
Year Designated 1927
Nomenclatural status valid
Recent revisions
Comments The genus name seems to have first appeared in Ehrenberg 1838 (ref. 006908), p. 176, as "Campylodiscus clypeus (= Cocconeis? clypeus)" but was not validly published (see ICBN 1994 Art. 34.1.d: "a taxon is not validly published by the mere mention of subordinate taxa included in the taxon concerned"). SVL incorrectly gives "Campylodiscus Ehrenberg 1840 (ref. 000293) p. 206" where Campylodiscus clypeus, C. noricus, C. remora, and C. (coronia) echeneis are described; there is however no generic description and it is therefore not validly published in this paper (ICBN 1994, Art 41.2). Kützing 1844 provides the validating generic description, describes 6 Campylodiscus species but does not designate a type.

Tabellaria C.G. Ehrenberg ex F.T. Kutzing 7/9 Nov 1844, pg. 127
Generitype LT: Tabellaria fenestrata (Lyngbye) Kutzing 1844 (= Diatoma fenestratum Lyngbye 1819)
Designated by Boyer (000155), p. 151
Year Designated 1927
Nomenclatural status valid
Recent revisions Knudson 1952 (ref. 002747)
Comments In Ehrenberg 1840 (ref. 000293) p. 217, the name Tabellaria is introduced with the Latin description of 2 species, Tabellaria ? amphicephala, Tabellaria trinodis, and the citation of Tabellaria bacillum (no description but reference to a previously published paper). No type is designated. It is not validly published in Ehrenberg 1840 because a generic description is lacking. The genus name became validly published in Kützing 1844, pg. 127 (ref. 000595), where a description of the genus is given. Seven species of Tabellaria are included in Kützing 1844 (including T. flocculosa, the first of them), no type is designated. Tabellaria flocculosa is given by Kützing 1844 as a possible synonym of Tabellaria trinodis Ehrenberg. Although this species may be the only one of Ehrenberg's original species included by Kützing in the genus, Kützing does not designate it as the type. Farr et al. (1979) and Round, Crawford & Mann (1990) are incorrect when giving T. flocculosa as the type. Boyer's choice of Tabellaria fenestrata is in accordance to ICBN Art. 10.2, has priority over Farr et al. (1979)'s choice, and should be followed.

Year Designated 1990

Comments Kützing does not specify that this is a new genus. Two species are described in the original publication (A. microcephalum and A. delicatulum), and no generitype is designated. In Cleve 1895 (ref. 000949) p. 191, it is introduced as "Achnanthidium (Kütz. 1844) Heib. 1863", there is, however, nothing in Heiberg 1863 (ref. 000471, p. 118) that justifies such a citation. According to Farr et al. 1979, Achnanthidium microcephalum was designated as the type by Rabenhorst 1853, p. 46 (ref. 000772); Rabenhorst transferred A. delicatulum into genus Falcatella, but retained A. microcephalum in Achnanthidium (p. 25), his action by itself does not constitute lectotypification which is effected by Ross in Farr et al. 1979, p. 12.

Comments Three species (A. pellucida, A. danica and A. rigida) are described in the original publication and no type is designated. Cleve 1894 (ref. 000232), p. 125 states "the genus Amphipleura was founded in 1844 by Kützing for Frustulia pellucida..". This statement can be taken as the lectotypification of the genus.

Comments Type by "synonymy and monotypification". Type designated by Grunow in Van Heurck 1881, pl. 54 (ref. 001035). Comments: Four species are originally described, and no type is designated. Navarro & Williams 1991 (ref. 006866) state: "Grunow in Van Heurck 1881 transferred all species of Hyalosira to Striatella [as varieties of S. delicatula] considering them to be conspecific, and selected S. delicatula as their type". Although Grunow did not explicitly state that S. delicatula is the type of the genus, we interpret Grunow's action as constituting typification of the genus with S. delicatula . Farr et al. (1979) and current Internet version of the ING indicate that the type is not designated.

Comments Eight species originally included, no generitype designated. Listed as nom. rej. vs. Diatoma in the Paris Code (ICBN 1956, ref. 006916) because at that time Diatoma was conserved as of Grunow 1862. When the place of publication of the conserved name was taken back to Bory 1824 (see subsequent codes), Odontidium Kützing 1844 became a later taxonomic synonym and is no longer rejected. It can be used for a genus typified by O. hyemale that excludes Diatoma vulgaris.
