Comments Description of genus p. XV, 2 species described p. 9 (D. swartzii and D. tenax), no generitype designated. SVL says: "not a diatom genus but considered by Agardh to belong to 'Diatomeae'?". ING (1996) gives "Desmidium C.A. Agardh ex Ralfs, Brit. Desmid. 49, 60. 1848. LT.: D. swartzii C.A. Agardh ex Ralfs (vide Naegeli, Neue Denkschr. Allg. Schweiz. Naturf. Comments Gomphonema Agardh 1824 is rejected vs Gomphonema Ehrenberg 1832 (nom. cons.) (see ICBN 1956, p. 200, ref. 006916). No type is listed in ICBN 1956 (ref. 006916), G. geminatum is given as type in ICBN 1961 (ref. 006910), p. 208. In original publication, Latin description of the genus p. XVI and Latin descriptions of 2 species G. paradoxum (p. 11) and G. geminatum (p. 12), no type designated. Farr et al. 1979 indicate that the type (G. geminatum) was designated by Kutzing 1844 (ref. 000595), p. 86, 122. Kützing transferred Echinella paradoxa (on which G. paradoxum is based) to genus Rhipidophora (p. 122), retaining Gomphonema geminatum within genus Gomphonema (p. 86). Kützing's action by itself does not constitute lectotypification of the genus. Pre-conservation lectotypification with G. geminatum is effected by Boyer 1927, p. 187 (ref. 000155). Nomenclatural synonym: Didymosphenia M. Schmidt 1899 (nom. cons.).

Melosira C.A. Agardh May-Sept 1824, pg. XIV, 8
Generitype T: Melosira nummuloides Agardh 1824

Year Designated 1956
Nomenclatural status nom. cons., orth. cons.

Comments Name conserved with a conserved spelling against Lysigonium Link 1820 (taxonomic synonym) (see ICBN 1956, p. 201, ref. 006916). Genus name spelled "Meloseira" in original publication. ING (1996) says "Melosira Agardh 1824 (Meloseira corr. Kützing, Linnaea 8:68, 1833, ref. 000594). (Nom. et Orth. cons.)". Genus described p. XIV, 5 species listed p. 8, no generitype designated. Pre-conservation lectotypification in Boyer 1927, p. 24 (ref. 000155). Round, Crawford & Mann 1990 (p. 694) say: "Note: The basionym of Fragilaria nummuloides (Dillwyn) Lyngbye is Conferva nummuloides Dillwyn, Brit. Confervae. Agardh, whilst citing Fragilaria nummuloides Lyngbye as a synonym of his Meloseira nummuloides, cites Conferva nummuloides Dillwyn as a synonym of Meloseira discigera. Accordingly, Meloseira nummuloides must be treated as a new name, not a new combination." See also Gaillionella Bory 1825 (nomenclatural synonym of Lysigonium).

Comments Latin description of the genus p. XIV, latin description of 3 species p. 2-3, M. vernale, M. ovatum, M. radians, no type designated. Farr et al. (1979) however, gives Meridion vernale C.A. Agardh as the holotype. Hanna (unpubl. ms) remarked, and we can confirm, that the type, Meridion vernale, was designated by Bory (Dict. Class. d'Hist. Nat., vol. 10, 1826, p. 425, ref. 000145).
