Comments Subgenus of Tropidoneis Cleve 1891. Type not designated. SVL gives the following information: Amphoropsis A. Grunow in Van Heurck 1880 (#000895), pl. 22bis, fig. 9-10. This subgenus is introduced as follows in Van Heurck 1880 (# 000895) in the plate caption for pl. 22bis: Amphora - fig. 9-10. A. (Amphoropsis) recta Grun. (Amphiprora recta Gregory ?). Fig. 11. A. (Amphoropsis) decipiens Grun. (Amphiprora plicata Gregory ?). See Cleve 1891 (000228) p. 53 and Cleve 1894 (000232) p. 22-24. Cleve 1891 modifies the concept of Amphoropsis Grunow, keeping in this genus only the forms of the type A. recta and A. conserta. Furthermore, Cleve 1891 treats this group as a subgenus of genus Tropidoneis Cleve 1891. See Van Heurck 1896 (# 000897) p. 261 :Prof. Pfitzer, in 1871, re-arranged the species (of Amphiprora) which authors had up to that time described, an divided them into his Amphitropis and Plagiotropis. Prf. Cleve has lately re-constructed the genus in Le Diatomiste (1891), by subdividing the forms into a number of very characteristic groups. Van Heurck 1896 p. 261 presents, describes (and accepts) Amphoropsis as a subgenus of Amphiprora. I(EF) thinks that the correct reference for Amphoropsis should be Amphoropsis Grunow ex Cleve 1891 p. 52-53 (#000228), subgenus of Tropidoneis Cleve 1891. The name was not validly published by Grunow in Van Heurck 1880 pl. 22B, fig. 9-11 (#000895) because lacking a description while illustrating 2 species. Cleve 1891 validated it by providing a description. No type designated by Cleve. ING gives Amphoropsis Spegazzini 1918 (Fungi).

Comments Subgenus of genus Tropidoneis Cleve 1891. Cleve named and described this new subgenus is the following way: I think it is more natural to group in a same genus the genera Plagiotropis, Amphoropsis, forms of the type of A. maxima that we could call Orthotropis, and forms of the type A. membranacea: Apteroe. In his 1894 Synopsis (000232) however, Cleve considered only 3 groups within the genus Tropidoneis: Orthotropis, Plagiotropis and Amphoropsis; he placed then the species A. membranacea in the group Orthotropis. Type by monotypy.

Comments Subgenus of genus Tropidoneis Cleve. In his discussion about genus Amphiprora Ehr., Cleve (1891, #000228) names and describes this new subgenus in the following way (in French) :I think it is more natural to unit in a same genus the Plagiotropis, Amphoropsis, also the forms of the type of the Amphiprora maxima that we could call Orthotropis, and the forms of the type A. mambrabacea: Apteroe. As a generic name for this 4 groups, we could choose the name Tropidoneis. The only Orthotropis species mentioned in #000228 is Amphiprora maxima. In Cleve 1894 (000232) there is some discussion and description about (sub)genus Orthotropis (p. 22-23) and description of 7 species (transfered into genus Tropidoneis)..

Comments In his discussion about genus Amphiprora Cleve 1891 created the genus Tropidoneis to group in a same genus 4 groups: Plagiotropis Pfitzer, Amphoropsis Grunow in Van Heurck, Orthotropis Cleve (forms of the type of Amphiprora maxima) and Apteroe (forms of the type of Amphiprora membranacea). In his discussion about genus Amphiprora Cleve 1891 created genus Tropidoneis to unite 4 groups in the same genus: Plagiotropis Pfitzer, Amphoropsis Grunow in Van Heurck, Orthotropis Cleve (forms of the type of Amphiprora maxima) and Apteroe (forms of the type of Amphiprora membranacea). No type is designated in Cleve 1891. It is somewhat difficult to determine which species were originally included by Cleve (incidentally, he did not form any binomials with Tropidoneis); we believe that the following species were undoubtedly included: Amphiprora maxima, Amphiprora membranacea, Amphiprora vitrea, Amphoropsis recta, Amphoropsis conserta. Cleve 1891 (ref. 000228), p. 52, has indicated that Amphiprora vitrea Smith 1853 is synonymous with Plagiotropis baltica Pfitzer 1871. In Cleve (1894) (ref. 000232), there is a long description/discussion about the genus Tropidoneis Cleve 1891, and description of 24 Tropidoneis species. In this 1894 paper, he considers only 3 groups within genus Tropidoneis: Orthotropis, Plagiotropis, and Amphoropsis (he chosed to place A. membranacea in the Orthotropis group). No type is designated in Cleve 1894 (ref. 000232). Tropidoneis Cleve 1891 is a later taxonomic synonym of Plagiotropis Pfitzer 1871 which is a later homonym of Plagiotropis F.v. Müller 1857.
