Caloneis P.T. Cleve 1894, pg. 46
Generitype LT: Caloneis amphisbaena (Bory de Saint Vincent) P.T. Cleve (= Navicula Bory de Saint Vincent 1824)
Designated by Boyer, C.S. (000946), p. 306
Year Designated 1927

Comments Caloneis was first introduced and described by Cleve in Cleve and Grove 1891 (ref. 001973), p. 66, as a subgroup of Navicula. Two new taxa were described and illustrated, they were introduced as "Navicula (Caloneis) biclavata n.sp." and "Navicula (Caloneis) oemula var? major" and 8 additional taxa cited in note p. 66; no type was designated. Caloneis is described and treated as a new genus by Cleve (1894) (ref. 000232), p. 46, including among many species the two original species of the subgroup. No type is designated in Cleve 1894. Because Cleve (1894) did not make any reference, direct or indirect, to Navicula subgroup Caloneis in Cleve & Grove 1891, it cannot be cited Caloneis (Cleve) Cleve and Boyer was free to choose the lectotype among any of the species included in 1894.

Comments It seems that the first mention of the name Diploneis is in Ehrenberg 1844 (ref. 002694), where it appears p. 65, 71 (as part of a list as Pinnularia (Diploneis) with the species didyma, bombus, crabro, entomon, diomphala) and p. 84-85 (with the Latin description of the new species Pinnularia (Diploneis) bombus and Pinnularia (Diploneis) crabro). This name was intended by Ehrenberg (1844) for a subgroup within the genus Pinnularia and no type was designated. Because no subgeneric description was given, the subgenus name was not validly published. Cleve (1894), p. 76 (ref. 000232) treats Diploneis as a genus, provides an English description, comments about Ehrenberg's paper, describes and transfers to Diploneis a large number of taxa, but does not designate type.

Comments Cleve first proposed this group as a subgenus of Navicula in 1881 (ref. 000222, p. 13), and elevated the name to the genus level in 1894. He included several species both in his original usage, and in 1894, and did not indicate a generitype.

Comments Type by original designation. Comments: First account of this name in Cleve 1892 (ref. 001970), p. 78, for a subgenus of Scoliopleura, as : "Scoliopleura (Scoliotropis) latestriata var. amphora n. var." Later, Cleve 1894, p. 72 (ref. 0003232), formally described the group as a new genus and included S. latestriata and S. gilliesii. Cleve 1894, p. 72, wrote: "this genus has been formed for S. latestriata....later on, an other ...was discovered, S. gillesii". We believe that this statement constitutes designation of the holotype.

Comments Type by original designation. Farr et al. (1979) indicate that the type was designated by Boyer 1927 (ref. 000946), p. 428. The type, however, was designated by Cleve in the original publication (p. 190).
