Comments Type by monotypy. Name of type species may be illegitimate: Kützing (1834) p. 563 (p. 35 of reprint) gives "Frustulia crinita Martens in Steudel & Hochst., enum. plnt. Germ., p. 178" as synonym for Aristella minuta. Non Aristella (Trinius) Bertoloni 1833".

Comments Information in SVL is Ehrenberg 1838 (pubnum 000288) p. 29; this genus, however, is not found p. 29; it appears instead p. 224, in the section on Cocconema, where it is listed as Gomphonema (Paltonophora) lanceolatum Kutzing, Linnea, 1833, p. 38, and given as a synonym of Cocconema lanceolatum. Its first occurrence in the literature seems to be in Kutzing 1833 (000594) p. 38, where it is introduced as a subgroup of Gomphonema (Kutzing divided genus Gomphonema into 3 groups: Cymbophora, Paltonophora, Cocconema). Kutzing gives 2 species for Paltonophora: Gomphonema lanceolatum Ag. and Gomphonema angustum Ag., no type is designated (and no transfer done). Note: Ehrenberg 1838 (000288) p. 216 indicates that Paltonophora = Cocconema.

Comments The name is presented in Kützing 1834 as a synonym of Exilaria Greville 1827: "Exilaria Grev. (Psygmatella Ktz. in litt. 1831)" all the species included are placed by Kützing in the genus Exilaria. This name is not validly published by Kützing because it is "merely cited as a synonym" (see ICBN Art. 34.1/c). There is an entry for this name in Peragallo 1897 (ref. 001463), p. 775, however it is unclear if he accepted this genus.

Comments SVL says Sphenophora Ehrenberg 1838 (pub. 000288) p. 216 (subgenus of Gomphonema Agardh). This information is in part erroneous, the name Spenophora appears indeed p. 216 in the German discussion on Gomphonema where it is accredited to Kutzing 1833 and given as a subgenus of Gomphonema. Kutzing 1833 (000594) p. 39 (567) introduced this name as a subgroup within Gomphonema (Kutzing divided Gomphonema Ag. into 3 subgroups a) Cymbophora, b) Paltonophora, c) Sphenophora). Sphenophora is qualified by Kutzing as Gomphonemata genuina (true Gomphonema). Several species are described for the group Sphenophora but no type is given.

Comments According to Silva 1996 (ref. 006869) Kutzing assigned the genus to the “Desmidiaceae liberae”, and the diagnosis of this genus could apply to many different algae in more than one major taxonomic group (desmids, diatoms and chlorococcales). Six species, including 3 newly described were included in the original publication. See also Trochiscia Kutzing 1845 (ref. 001323).
