Comments This name was first proposed by Cleve (1893) as follows (translated from French)(Cleve 1893; infrapaginal note p. 57, ref. 000230): "I propose to unite Cocconeis and Achnanthes and to form new genera with forms that are linked by essential characters, under the names Actinoneis, Heteroneis, Achnanthes, Achnanthidium, etc." Also in Cleve 1893, two species were described and illustrated: Achnanthes (Actinoneis Cl.) heteromorpha Grun (pl. III, fig. 11-12) and Achnanthes (Actinoneis Cl.) inopinata Cl. (p. 57, pl. III fig. 13-14). Actinoneis was not validly published in Cleve 1893 because it did not include a description while including more than one species (see ICBN, 1994, Art. 42). A description is provided in Cleve 1895 (ref. 000949). Here in Cleve 1895 it is clearly treated as a subgenus (see p. 164), although introduced as a "genus" p. 185. Furthermore, Cleve does not propose any new combinations which shows that he considers it as a subgenus. Nine Achnanthes species are included, and no type is designated. Name validated by Mereschkowsky 1902 (ref. 652), pp. 43, 65, who introduced Actinoneis lorenziana var. parva. All combinations under Actinoneis published before Mereschkowsky 1902 are invalid.

Comments ING says:the status of this name, whether genus or subgenus, is obscure. Vide Cleve, op. cit. p. 194. Although Cleve introduced Disconeis as "N.G." (new genus) on page 180, he clearly introduced it as a subgenus p. 164-165. Furthermore, no transfers are made for the 6 species placed in this group (they remain in genera Achnanthes and Cocconeis), which shows that Cleve considered this group a subgenus. Six taxa were originally assigned to this group by Cleve, but no type species was indicated by him. Syntype species: A. hexagona Br. & Cl., C. lyra A.S., C. reticulata Cl., C. formosa Brun, C. versicolor Brun And C. pinnata Greg.

Comments This name was first introduced p. 57 in Cleve 1893 (ref. 000230) with the description of a single species Achnanthes (Heteroneis Cl.) vaszaryi Pant., var. oregonica Cl. (= Navicula vaszaryi Pant. 1889), illustrated pl. III, fig. 15-16, and accompanied with this infrapaginal note: "I propose to unite Cocconeis and Achnanthes and to form new genera linked by essential characters, under the names Actinoneis, Heteroneis, Achnanthes, Achnanthidium, etc." It is invalidly published as the name of a subgenus of Achnanthes in Cleve 1893 for lacking a description. Heteroneis is described in Cleve 1895 p. 182 (ref. 000949), however even though it is introduced as Heteroneis Cl. n.g. (p. 182), it is clearly presented as a subgenus of Achnanthes (p. 164, and 183). Furthermore, no combinations are made by Cleve 1895 under this name, which clearly shows that he considered it a subgenus. Several species are included by Cleve 1895 and no type is designated.

Comments Clearly introduced p. 164 as a new subgenus of Achnanthes, then designated as a new genus p. 187, yet new combinations under Microneis were not made which shows that Cleve intended this name as a subgenus name. Fourteen species originally included, no generitype designated.

Comments Cleve, p. 164, clearly states that Pleuroneis is a subgenus of Achnanthes, pg. 181 he calls it a new genus, yet new combinations for the 2 species included are not made, confirming Cleve's intent to make Pleuroneis a subgenus. No type originally designated.
