Diagnosis

This is one of the species with a divided eye (Ascalaphinae).  It has a very dark pterostigma and no other dark markings on the wings.  Males have many short, thick bristles on the abdomen and elongate ventral lobes of the ectoproct that are forcipate.  The only other similar species is Ululomyia sylvatica.  However, males of that species lack the abdominal bristles and have longer, down-turned ventral lobe of the ectoprocts.
