Diagnosis

This is one of the divided eye species (Ascalaphinae) of Madagascar with a dark pterostigma.  There is a row of creamy white spots on the lateral membrane of the abdomen, and two rows of bright yellow spots on the ventral surface of the abdomen.  The hind wings are relatively short, compared to the forewing.  This species is similar to Suphalomitus cephalotes, but males of U. sylvatica have no abdominal spines and the ventral lobes of the ectoproct are oriented downward and lyriform.

Geographical Distribution

This species is endemic to Madagascar and appears to be found in the western and southern parts of the country.
