HERPETOLOGY DEPARTMENT COLLECTION STATISTICS

As of January 2009, 296,611 specimens have been cataloged in the Department of Herpetology (this number includes lost and exchanged specimens and excludes larva and egg series, which are cataloged in lots).

The collection contains specimens from 166 countries with extensive holdings from the western United States, Baja California, and western mainland Mexico. The major strength of the CAS collection is in its coverage of the Old World, particularly Asia; the desert regions of North Africa; sub- Saharan Africa; East Africa; eastern Australia and New Guinea and the Pacific Islands. While holdings from the Neotropical and Palearctic regions are relatively modest, most nominal genera are represented by a reasonable diversity of species.
