Holotype (unique): ?BMNH 1978.1.16.2. Appeared first as name only in Kaup 1853:234. •Synonym of Oostethus brachyurus (Bleeker 1853), but a valid subspecies -- (Dawson 1979:467 [ref. 19285]). •Synonym of Microphis brachyurus (Bleeker 1853), but a valid subspecies -- (Dawson 1984:157 [ref. 5879], Dawson 1986:286 [ref. 6201], Dawson 1990:661 [ref. 17542], Lévêque in Lévêque et al. 1992:578 [ref. 21590], Snoeks & Vreven 2007:581 [ref. 30079], Fritzsche 2016:2237 [ref. 34608], Reiner 2019:150 [ref. 38139], ). •Valid as Microphis aculeatus (Kaup 1856) -- (Wirtz et al. 2007:7, 28 [ref. 30263] as a species on p. 28, Kuiter 2009:274 [ref. 30404], Félix et al. 2016:D [4] [ref. 34346], Hamilton et al. 2016:Supplement 4 [ref. 35615], Skelton 2019:228 [ref. 36564], Fermon et al. 2022:218 [ref. 39448], Haÿ et al. 2023:22 [ref. 40264]). Current status: Valid as Microphis aculeatus (Kaup 1856). Syngnathidae: Nerophinae. Distribution: Eastern Atlantic: Senegal south to Angola, including São Tomé and Principe. Habitat: freshwater, brackish.
