Syntypes: ?BMNH 1844.2.15.53-54 (2), ?1848.2.1.5 (1, dry, not seen), ?1848.3.31.5 (stuffed, in bottle). •Valid as Liza richardsonii (Smith 1846) (often seen as richardsoni) -- (Thomson 1986:347 [ref. 6215], Smith & Smith 1986:717 [ref. 5717], Bianchi & Carpenter in Bianchi et al. 1993:166 [ref. 25472], Thomson 1997:532 [ref. 23428], Heemstra & Heemstra 2004:366 [ref. 28072], Trape et al. 2012:127 [ref. 31792], Harrison 2016:2097 [ref. 34599], Durand & Whitfield 2016:106 [ref. 35590] with author as Smith 1846, Reiner 2019:128 [ref. 38139] as richardsoni). •Valid as Chelon richardsonii (Smith 1846) -- (Senou et al. 1996:75 [ref. 23193], Durand & Borsa 2015:268 [ref. 34115], Durand 2016:29 [ref. 35589], Ghasamzadeh 2022:315 [ref. 39712], Thieme et al. 2022:6 [ref. 39600]). Current status: Valid as Chelon richardsonii (Smith 1846). Mugilidae. Distribution: Southeastern Atlantic: Angola south to Cape of Good Hope (South Africa), including São Tomé and Principe; southwestern Indian Ocean: Cape of Good Hope north to KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa). Habitat: freshwater, brackish, marine.
