californiensis, Diapterus Gill [T. N.] 1862:245 [Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia v. 14; ref. 1665] Cape San Lucas, Baja California, Mexico. Treated as a nomen oblitum by De La Cruz-Agüero 2015:182 [ref. 35419]. •Valid as Eucinostomus californiensis (Gill 1862) -- (Hiyama in Kumada 1937:47 [ref. 39147]). •Often regarded as a synonym of Eucinostomus gracilis (Gill 1862) described in the same work; but Jordan in Jordan & Evermann 1898:1370, footnote 3 [ref. 2444] clearly states that Eucinostomus californiensis has priority over E. gracilis -- thereby serving as first reviser. •Apparently most current authors favor maintaining current usage, and gracilis is treated as valid. •Synonym of Eucinostomus gracilis (Gill 1862) -- (Castro-Aguirre et al. 1999:315 [ref. 24550], De La Cruz-Agüero 2015:182 [ref. 35419]). Current status: Synonym of Eucinostomus gracilis (Gill 1862). Gerreidae. Habitat: freshwater, brackish, marine.
