longispinis, Pontinus Goode [G. B.] & Bean [T. H.] 1896:258, Pl. 68 (fig. 246) [Special Bulletin U. S. National Museum No. 2; ref. 1848] Gulf of Mexico, 28°36'N, 85°33'30"W, Albatross station 2402, depth 111 fathoms. Lectotype: USNM 39323 (largest specimen). Paralectotypes: USNM 39322 (1), 39323 (2 of 3). The largest specimen in 39323 (126 mm SL originally) had been regarded as the holotype, and the description was based primarily on it; it was designated lectotype by Eschmeyer 1998:938 [ref. 23416]. •Valid as Pontinus longispinis Goode & Bean 1896 -- (Eschmeyer 1969:25 [ref. 1274], Uyeno & Sato in Uyeno et al. 1983:431 [ref. 14275], Robins & Ray 1986:263 [ref. 23100], Boschung 1992:97 [ref. 23239], Cervigón 1991:282 [ref. 24472], Cervigón 1992:421 [ref. 23827], Acero P. & Navas S. 1997:63 [ref. 26475], Aguilera 1998:48 [ref. 24221], Poss & Eschmeyer 2003:1247 [ref. 27048], Moura & Menezes in Menezes et al. 2003:72 [ref. 27192] as longispinnis dated 1897, Nelson et al. 2004:113 [ref. 27807], McEachran & Fechhelm 2005:35 [ref. 28815], Page et al. 2013:116 [ref. 32708], Pinheiro et al. 2015:11 [ref. 34324], Carvalho-Filho 2023:107 [ref. 40480] as longispinnis). Current status: Valid as Pontinus longispinis Goode & Bean 1896. Scorpaenidae: Scorpaeninae. Distribution: Western Atlantic: South Carolina (U.S.A.) south to Bahia (Brazil), including Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea. IUCN (2015): Least Concern. Habitat: marine.
