Based on Borlase 1758:269, Pl. 25, fig. 68 [ref. 30228]. •Synonym of Lepadogaster lepadogaster (Bonnaterre 1788), but a valid subspecies purpurea (Bonnaterre 1788) -- (Briggs 1955:36 [ref. 637], Briggs 1973:654 [ref. 7222], Briggs in Whitehead et al. 1986:1357 [ref. 13677], Briggs 1990:475 [ref. 15498]). •Valid as Lepadogaster purpurea (Bonnaterre 1788) -- (Henriques et al. 2002:334 [ref. 26172], Carneiro et al. 2019:205 [ref. 37250], Kovačić et al. 2020:31 [ref. 37519], Bañón & Maño 2021:62 [ref. 38883]). Current status: Valid as Lepadogaster purpurea (Bonnaterre 1788). Gobiesocidae: Lepadogastrinae. Distribution: Western Mediterranean Sea; eastern Atlantic: British Isles south to Senegal, including Azores, Madeira and Canary Islands. Habitat: marine.
