Paralectotypes: USNM 28136 (1, lost), 28141 (1, lost), 329626 [ex 29212, not 28212 as published] (1). Type catalog: Smith 1994:14 [ref. 21917]. Described from 1 specimen, but two more catalog numbers given in main heading; regarded by Smith as syntypes; lectotype selected by Smith 1994:14 [ref. 21917]. •Valid as Cynoponticus coniceps (Jordan & Gilbert 1882) -- (Smith 1989:437 [ref. 13285], Allen & Robertson 1994:57 [ref. 22193], Bussing & López S. 1994:40 [ref. 23101], Smith in Fischer et al. 1995:1301 [ref. 22830], Franke & Acero P. 1996:764 [ref. 22923], Ruiz-Campos et al. 1998:146 [ref. 24070], Chirichigno F. & Vélez D. 1998:131 [ref. 24555], Nelson et al. 2004:64 [ref. 27807], Love et al. 2005:21 [ref. 37547], Page et al. 2013:64 [ref. 32708], González-Murcia et al. 2019:289 [ref. 36544]). Current status: Valid as Cynoponticus coniceps (Jordan & Gilbert 1882). Muraenesocidae. Distribution: Eastern Pacific: Baja California Sur and Gulf of California (Mexico) south to Ecuador. Habitat: marine.
