Current status: Valid as Gymnothorax prionodon Ogilby 1895. Muraenidae: Muraeninae. Distribution: Eastern Indian Ocean, western Pacific: Philippines, eastern Indonesia and New Guinea east to Vanuatu, north to central Japan, south to Gascoyne (Western Australia), southern New South Wales (Australia) and North Island (New Zealand). Hybridizes with Gymnothorax kidako (Temminck & Schlegel 1846). Habitat: marine.
