Lectotype: ZISP [= ZIN] 53670 [ex 24349]. Paralectotypes: (10) ZIN 24349 (now 6). Boldyrev & Bogutskaya 2007:41 [ref. 29150] identify 5 paralectotypes of kessleri as svetovidovi. Lectotype selected by Boldyrev & Bogutskaya 2007:49 [ref. 29150]. •Synonym of Benthophilus grimmi Kessler 1877, but a valid subspecies as described -- (Berg 1949:1122 [ref. 20662], Coad 1995:29 [ref. 23608]). •Valid as Benthophilus kessleri Berg 1927 -- (Reshetnikov et al. 1997:753 [ref. 24702], Vasil'eva 1998:128 [ref. 23591], Pinchuk & Miller in Miller 2004:201 [ref. 27853], Bogutskaya & Naseka 2004:217 [ref. 28183], Boldyrev & Bogutskaya 2007:47 [ref. 29150], Neilson & Stepien 2009:96 [ref. 30497], Esmaeili et al. 2010:376 [ref. 33391], Jouladeh-Roudbar et al. 2015:897 [ref. 34062], Esmaeili et al. 2017:80 [ref. 35254], Esmaeili et al. 2018:61 [ref. 36089], Parenti 2021:70 [ref. 38603], Zarei et al. 2022:167 [ref. 39576]). Current status: Valid as Benthophilus kessleri Berg 1927. Gobiidae: Gobiinae. Distribution: Eurasia: Caspian Sea basin. Habitat: freshwater, brackish.
