Holotype (unique): BMNH 1953.5.10.7 (dry). •Valid as Leptocharias smithii (Müller & Henle 1839) -- (Compagno 1973:27 [ref. 7163], Branstetter in Whitehead et al. 1984:119 [ref. 13675], Compagno 1984:380 [ref. 6846], Bass et al. 1986:80 [ref. 5638], Springer 1990:96 [ref. 19320], Wirtz et al. 2013:115 [ref. 32972], Weigmann 2016:28 [ref. 34211], Compagno 2016:1269 [ref. 34544], Almeida & Biscoito 2019:74 [ref. 37302], Reiner 2019:28 [ref. 38139], Fermon et al. 2022:94 [ref. 39448]). Current status: Valid as Leptocharias smithii (Müller & Henle 1839). Leptochariidae. Distribution: Eastern Atlantic: Mauritania south to Angola, including Cape Verde Islands and São Tomé and Principe. Habitat: marine.
