Holotype (unique): MNHN A-5441 (dry). Illustrated on Pl. 5 (fig. 4) of v. 2, 1800 [ref. 2709], but with vernacular name. Based on 'Psettus spinis pinnarum ventralium loco duabus' in description and illustration in manuscript by Commerson (Philibert Commerson, 1727-1773, French explorer and naturalist). Syntypes: MNHN A-0255 (2), A-0256 (2), A-0258 (1), A-3831 (1) Bauchot's holotype. Type catalog: Bauchot 1963:154-155 [ref. 20718] with holotype and paratypes. This species dates to Psettus sebae Cuvier 1829; see that account. •Valid as Monodactylus sebae (Cuvier 1831) -- (Desoutter 1990:830 [ref. 18967]). •Correctly a synonym of Monodactylus sebae (Cuvier 1829). sebae, Psettus Cuvier [G.] 1829:193 [Le Règne Animal (Edition 2) v. 2; ref. 995] No locality. Syntypes: MNHN A-3831 (1). Based on Chaetodon rhombeus Bloch & Schneider 1801, preoccupied in Psettus by Scomber rhombeus Forsskal 1775. Available from footnote as, "Psett. Sebae, N., Chaetodon rhombeus, Bl. Schn., Seb. III, xxvi, 21." See also Cuvier & Valenciennes 1831:241, pl. 189 [ref. 4881]. We treat as a new species based on Bloch & Schneider and on Seba. Seba's specimen is extant (MNHN A.3831) and could be designated lectotype. •Valid as Monodactylus sebae (Cuvier 1829) -- (Desoutter 1986:339 [ref. 6212], Bauchot in Lévêque et al. 1992:706 [ref. 21590], Poll & Gosse 1995:103 [ref. 24781], Vreven 2007:441 [ref. 30080], Wirtz et al. 2007:13, 36 [ref. 30263], Félix et al. 2016:D [4] [ref. 34346], Desoutter in Carpenter & De Angelis 2016:2661 [ref. 34618], Reiner 2019:228 [ref. 38139], Skelton 2019:228 [ref. 36564], Fermon et al. 2022:285 [ref. 39448]). Distribution: Eastern Atlantic: Senegal south to Angola, including Canary Islands (Spain), São Tomé and Principe; not found at Cape Verde Islands. Habitat: freshwater, brackish, marine.
