Appeared in the synonymy of Anthias sacer and credited to Bloch 1792 [ref. 14112]. The name does not appear as such in Bloch 1792; only the common name of "Pennantsche Barsch", a description (p. 422), and figure (Pl. 9, fig. 1). See Perca pennanti Bloch in Cuvier 1828.
