Current status: Synonym of Japonoconger proriger (Gilbert 1891). Congridae: Congrinae. Habitat: marine. prorigerum, Ophisoma Gilbert [C. H.] 1891:350 [Proceedings of the United States National Museum v. 14 (no. 856); ref. 1625] Off Ecuador, 0°37'00"S, 81°00'00"W, Albatross station 2792, depth 401 fathoms. Holotype: USNM 44295. Paratypes: (1). Type catalog: Smith 1994:10 [ref. 21917]. Ophisoma is a synonym of Ariosoma Swainson 1838, so we place the species in Ariosoma for now. •Valid as Ophisoma prorigerum Gilbert 1891 -- (Bussing & López S. 1994:38 [ref. 23101]). •Valid but genus uncertain -- (Smith 1994:10 [ref. 21917], Smith in Fischer et al. 1995:1034 [ref. 22829], McCosker & Rosenblatt 2010:189 [ref. 30957]). •Valid as Japonoconger proriger (Gilbert 1891) -- (Robertson et al. 2017:32 [ref. 35676], Grove et al. 2022:16 [ref. 41326], Page et al. 2023:56 [ref. 40505]). Current status: Valid as Japonoconger proriger (Gilbert 1891). Congridae: Congrinae. Distribution: Eastern Pacific: Costa Rica south to Ecuador, including Galapagos Islands (Ecuador).
