Distribution: Western Atlantic: eastern Florida (U.S.A.) and Bermuda south to São Paulo (Brazil), including Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, and Trindade Island (Brazil); southern-central Atlantic: Ascension Island; eastern Atlantic: Ivory Coast to Equatorial Guinea, including São Tomé and Principe. IUCN (2015): Least concern. Habitat: marine.

Primary description is quoted from Mowbray, who is regarded as the sole author. •Synonym of Phaeoptyx pigmentaria (Poey 1860) -- (T. Fraser, pers. comm. 9/2000). Current status: Synonym of Phaeoptyx pigmentaria (Poey 1860). Apogonidae: Apogoninae. Habitat: marine.
