Distribution: Indo-West Pacific: KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa), East Africa, Mayotte (France), Madagascar and western Mascarenes (La Réunion, Mauritius) east to Samoa, north to Korea and Kuril Islands, south to Western Australia at 27°42'S, New South Wales (Australia) at 34°53'S and New Caledonia. Habitat: brackish, marine.

Spelled hamiltoniae on p. 182 but as hamiltonii on p. 203, p. 210, and in index. Eschmeyer as first revisor selected hamiltonii. •Synonym of Muraenesox bagio (Hamilton 1822) -- (Kottelat 2013:48 [ref. 32989]). Current status: Synonym of Muraenesox bagio (Hamilton 1822). Muraenesocidae. Distribution: India. Habitat: marine.

yamaguchiensis, Muraenesox Katayama [M.] & Takai [T.] 1954:97, Figs. 1-2 [Japanese Journal of Ichthyology v. 3; ref. 12653] Kudamatsu fish market, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan. Holotype: NSMT [ex Katayama's Fish Coll. 1764] (not seen). Paratypes: Katayama's Fish Coll. 1752-1756 (5), 1757 (1), 1758-1763 (6), 1806-1807 (2), 1811 (1). •Valid as Muraenesox yamaguchiensis Katayama & Takai 1954 -- (Zheng et al. 1989:36 [ref. 21202], Zhang et al. 2010:294 [ref. 31511]). •Synonym of Muraenesox bagio (Hamilton 1822) -- (Ho et al. 2015:151 [ref. 34130]). Current status: Synonym of Muraenesox bagio (Hamilton 1822). Muraenesocidae. Habitat: brackish, marine.
