Transcript of Questions for Nancy Morin

Chris Thompson:
I notice you used the word "provisional" on your checklist. Does this indicate that you're willing to put up un-vetted data, in the sense that it's been vetted once because it came from a published source, but it hasn't been through the final vetting?

Nancy Morin:
Yes. Right now we're making the provisional checklist available generally, because the Internet is going to be our preferred way to give the taxonomic specialists access to the information. So it needs to be available at least to them. The idea is, if a new data set comes up, for instance, now that we've got the ability to make the information available, we can let taxonomic specialists know that it exists. They can then go in, have their own discussions about the names and classifications that appear there, go through that editing process, and then the vetted data can go back up with an indication that it's reached the next level of reliability.
