AUSTRALIAN FISH BIODIVERSITY WEBSITE. The Australian Fish Biodiversity Website is designed to promote and disseminate information about fish collections and taxonomic research on fishes within Australia. It is the result of the efforts of collection management staff and research scientists of the nine major Australian institutions holding fish collections, and is the initial step in the multistage development of an on-line electronic information source for the provision of:

  • details about the institutions within Australia having significant, permanent collections of fishes, as well as insights into the collections themselves;
  • information about research scientists who are working, or have previously worked on the taxonomy and biogeography of Australian fishes, and about the nature of their studies;
  • a series of aids for the identification of Australian fishes and for attaining additional information about these taxa, and
  • stories like 'Names' relating to the taxonomy and biology of fishes. The initial version of the website is part of the much larger Australian Museums On Line facility and can be reached directly at http://amol.org.au/collection/hostedwebs/fish/index.html

THE BIOGEOGRAPHY OF AUSTRALIAN FRESHWATER FISHES is now online with lots of information and figures. http://fish.la.asu.edu/biogeog

BIOGEOGRAPHY SPREADSHEET FOR INDO-PACIFIC SHOREFISHES: I am currently creating a biogeographic table of shorefish fish distributions for the Indo-Pacific on an Excel spreadsheet. The purpose of the spreadsheet is to compare biodiversity across regions and aid in producing detailed species distribution maps. It includes all species of shorefishes that occur down to 200 m, including freshwater gobioids as well as deeper-dwelling species within certain families that include shorefishes (e.g. many eels, dragonets, scorpaeniforme\s). It is based primarily on published checklists, taxonomic revisions and periodic reviews of key journals, but also utilizes much unpublished information from other verifiable sources such as museum collection data-bases. So far, I've completed the Pacific/Philippines Plate from Hong Kong, Queensland, and PNG to Hawaii and Easter Island, but still have to fill in gaps such as Tonga, the Solomon Is., and Vanuatu. The South China Sea, Philippines and eastern Indonesia are next. I am interested in contributions from anyone with recent, accurate lists of fishes from their area, especially lists that can be emailed as electronic files convertible to MS Word or Excel. Of course, I would be happy to share information from my spreadsheet. Since this is an unfunded project that gets "shelved" for long periods of time, I ask past and future collaborators to please bear with me and I will eventually get back to you. Since it now occupies nearly 100 pages of near-microscopic text, I rarely print it and prefer to share it or portions of it as an electronic file. Robert F. Myers, P.O. Box 21153, GMF, Guam 96921, USA; Tel (671) 734-1092 (call first to fax from ca. 1300-2200 GMT); E-mail: rmyers@netpci.com.

INVALID NEOTYPES. In the following papers published in 1999, several neotypes were designated to solve taxonomical problems: FRICKE, R. 1999. Annotated checklist of the marine and estuarine fishes of Germany, with remarks on their taxonomic identity. Stuttg. Beitr. Naturk., (A) 587:1-67. FRICKE, R. 1999. Fishes of the Mascarene Islands (Réunion, Mauritius, Rodriguez): an annotated checklist, with descriptions of new species. Koenigstein (Koeltz Scientific Books), viii + 759 pp. These neotypes should not be used, as their designation is not sufficiently in accordance with Art. 75b and Art. 75d of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature. The taxonomical problems addressed in the publications should be solved in the future. (R. Fricke).

ICZN. The new and extensively revised 4th edition of the “International Code of Zoological Nomenclature” has now been published and will come into effect on 1 January 2000.
