AQUACULTURE AND BIOTECHNOLOGY. 1999, Iddya Karunasagar, Indrani Karunasagar, Alan Reilly, eds. This book deals with biotechnological approaches to disease diagnosis, pathogen detection, antibacterial therapy, immunoprophylaxis of diseases and sex manipulations in fishes. The immense biotechnological potential of species diversity in the marine environment and the green fluorescent protein from marine jelly fish as a marker in a number of biological systems are covered in two chapters. Value addition to fish by fermentation and the changing concepts in fisheries development are discussed, also included are contributions by scientists from the United Kingdom, Sweden, Germany, Thailand and India. FISHES OF BERMUDA: HISTORY, ZOOGEOGRAPHY, ANNOTATED CHECKLIST, AND IDENTIFICATION KEYS by William F. Smith-Vaniz, Bruce B. Collette, and Brian E. Luckhurst. 1999. 424 p, 12 full-color plates, hardbound. Identification keys, synonymies, and extralimital range statements are provided for most of the 433 species known historically from Bermuda as adults and an additional 13 species recorded only as juveniles. Eighty-five species are added to the known Bermuda ichthyofauna, and 55 previously reported species are shown to have been based on misidentifications, unsuccessful introductions, unreliable documentation or questionable locality data. The rich history of the utilization and management of Bermuda's fisheries is discussed and brief biographies are included of nine early naturalists and ichthyologists who made important contributions to Bermuda ichthyology. Previously unpublished watercolors and observations made by Col. H.M. Drummond-Hay in 1847-51 are discussed and 41 of his watercolors are reproduced on 9 color pls. An extensive bibliography of over 1,000 references includes nearly all the literature on the fish fauna of Bermuda. Price: $48.00*, hardbound, U.S. and Canada (postage/handling included). Foreign orders add $6.50 for first book, $3.50 for additional copy (surface shipment). (*Members of the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists may purchase one copy at a 20% discount of $38.40.) "ICTIOFAUNA ESTUARINO-LAGUNAR Y VICARIA DE MÉXICO". Castro-Aguirre, J.L., H. Espinosa Pérez & J.J. Schmitter-Soto. In press. México, D.F.: Ed. LIMUSA, S.A. De C.V., ca. 700 p. (ISBN 968-18-5774-7). The main part of the book (in Spanish) is a systematic catalogue of the marine (commonly found in continental waters), estuarine and vicarious fish species of both coasts of México (563 spp.), including keys for families, genera and species. It provides a list of references and partial synonymies for each species, as well as several data about geographic range, and Mexican continental localities where the fish species have been found. Some data on biological and ecological information are included. The second part is an essay about the origin of the estuarine and coastal lagoons ichthyofauna and the several ecological and physiological classifications which have been proposed. The third chapter is mainly a discussion on biogeographical and ecological matters, based on the species included in the first part. Two appendixes (geographical index and a synoptical table on biogeographical and ecological data for each species) and an analytical index are provided. At the end of the book, more than 1130 references cited are listed. The preface was kindly written by Drs. Dean A. Hendrickson (University of Texas) and John D. McEachran (Texas A & M University). This book will appear by the end of November, 1999. For information, please contact Limusa Editorial House: Tel. (toll free): (800) 7 06 91 00; Fax (5) 512 29 03; E-mail limusa@noriega.com.mx

THE LARVAE OF INDO-PACIFIC COASTAL FISHES: An Identification Guide to Marine Fish Larvae. Edited by Jeffrey M. Leis & Brooke M. Carson-Ewart The second volume in the Fauna Malesiana book series gives an extensive overview of the larval development of 125 families of fishes, many of them of importance for both fishery and from ecological perspectives. The families that are described originate from the center of global marine biodiversity: the tropical Indo-Pacific Oceans, a region rich with coral reefs, as well as mangrove, estuarine, and coastal shelf habitats. The identification guide not only documents the ontogeny of these fishes but also provides the means to identify these extraordinarily diverse larvae to the level of family. The book offers a wealth of instructive and detailed figures and illustrations (219 plates, each consisting of approximately 4 figures) for enabling the identification of these families and their larval specialization. Publication expected in December 1999. Cloth (approx. 750 pp.), ISBN 90 04 11577 3. Price NLG 425./ US$ 250.- The publisher, EJ Brill, is offering a PREPUBLICATION PRICE of NLG 297.50 / US$ 175 for orders received before 31 Dec 1999. SEAHORSES: AN IDENTIFICATION GUIDE TO THE WORLD'S SPECIES AND THEIR CONSERVATION. Lourie, S.A., A.C.J. Vincent & H.J. Hall. 224pp. ISBN 0 9534693 0 1. Project Seahorse. 1999 (in

press). Available through NATURAL HISTORY BOOK SERVICE LTD, 2-3 Wills Road, Totnes, Devon, TQ9 5XN.; Email nhbs@nhbs.co.uk. Internet:http://www.nhbs.co.uk; Tel +44 (1803) 865 913; Fax +44 (1803) 865 280. Based on original morphometric and genetic research, this book is the only currently available comprehensive treatment of seahorse species world-wide, and the first attempt at a global revision of the genus. Detailed background information introduces the fascinating biology of these unusual fishes, the threats that they face and conservation efforts that are underway. Available evidence suggests that population numbers in the wild are declining, yet we do not even know how many seahorse species there are. This book describes the group in clear, non-technical language with full illustrations, photographs, species distributions and a pictorial key. It is aimed at conservationists, researchers, museum curators, fishers, trade and Customs officials, aquarists and interested lay-people alike. Proceeds from the sale of the book will go to Project Seahorse's conservation initiatives for seahorses, their relatives and their habitats around the world.
