Water temp. = ? C. At each site, we set 6 1/8 inch mesh traps and 4 1/4 inch mesh traps. All traps set between 1600 and 1700 at sites B-E. We will set A later. Many large trout in lake. Local resident said lake level dropped recently, noting what he thought was illegal pumping for construction. Saw one loon and one grebe. Numerous stickleback at site A and in schools near bottom in 1 m of water. Station B: pulled at 1800 on 15 June. Only stickleack caught. Very abundant; filled 2 liter bottles with first 9 traps. Station E: pulled at 1815 hr on 15 June. Only stickleback caught. Not quite as abundant as at station E, but nearly 2 bottles filled. Reproductive males and females at both sites. Station D: pulled at 1833 on 15 June. 2 salmonids in traps. Otherwise only stickleback. They were so abundant that we filled 2 bottles with 6 traps and released the rest. Station C: pulled at 1855 hr on 15 June. Only stickleback; filled 2 bottles. Saw grebe eating stickleback. It came to surface, manipulated them and ate them head first. Stickleback fry in algae adhering to grass. Station A: set 4 1/4" mesh and 6 1/8" mesh traps on 20 June at boat ramp/public access at 1900. Pulled traps at 2030 hr on 21 June. Catch same as below. Set 10 1/8" mesh traps at 1920 at far end of greenhouse (100 m along shore at gravel pit) for adults for behavior experiments. Pulled these traps at greenhouse at 2000 hr on 21 June. Few adults. |

Water temp. = ? C. All traps set between 1800 and 1930 hr. Site A: place usually sampled in previous years. Site B: on west shore near outlet. Site C: near back of trout basin at beaver lodge. Site D: near back of rear basin. Lake level had risen about 25 cm by beaver dam on outlet. Rear basin had lots of brown floating algae and submerged branches. Front basin had Chara patches on marl and emergent vegetation and fallen logs near shore. Site A: began picking up traps at 300. 31 blackfish and a lot of stickleback-2 full jars in formalin, none were let go. Site B: 325 began collecting. Caught 1 rainbow trout and 6 blackfish. 1 jar of stickleback was collected, none were thrown back. There was a "blackfish effect". Traps with blackfish had little or no stickleback. Site C: 356. 2 sculpin, 2 trout and 3 blackfish were caught. 1 very full jar of stickleback caught. None were thrown back. Site D: 410 about 1/2 jar of stickleback was collected. Many traps were found empty and a few were found very full. |
