Collecting Event Remarks Water temp. = 19.0 C. Many truncated sticklebacks here. One nuptially colored male with red on pectoral and anal base running down to end of peduncle and onto ventral procurrent caudal rays. Worker at gravel pit said there had been a fish kill in the last month or two. G. aculeatus was very abundant and G. orcutti though less abundant was common. Fishes collected from eddies next to current measured. Eddies were 1-3 m wide and about. Few small sticklebacks present. No sticklebacks thrown back. Also caught Gila orcutti.

Collecting Event Remarks Water temp. = 11.5 C. This is a pool about 40 m x 100 m behind a cobblestone dam built for intake of water for Venture municipal water supply. Sticklebacks are very abundant (one haul needed) but Gila was rare, only 3 in nets. Fish in generally good condition, but no or few males with full nuptial coloration (blue background body color). Also caught Gila orcutti.

Collecting Event Remarks Water temp. = 16.5 C. Sluggish reach of stream. There were many males with red on throat but a few with blue body color. No gravid females. Stream margins choked with duck weed, filamentous algae and emergent broadleaf vegetation. Also caught Gila orcutti.

Collecting Event Remarks Water Temp. = 20 C. Seining from saline portion to fresher area where Cyprinid found. Most sticklebacks [Gasterosteus aculeatus] collected over dead marine algae but also abundant among cobbles. We may have been seining across an area where freshwater met saline. Few fish in reproductive condition. Number above indicate abundance. Nearly all sticklebacks saved. Also caught in order of abundance: (1) Fundulus parvipinis, (2) Gasterosteus aculeatus, (3) Eucyclogobius newberryi, (4) Leptocottus armatus, (5) atherinid, (6) cyprinid, and (7) Gambusia affinis.

Collecting Event Remarks Water temp. = 12.5 C. This is a tributary we did not see on map. Picked up a Clemmys turtle, crayfish and saw one aquatic mammal (muskrat or otter?). Many small sticklebacks and some large from last haul thrown back. Fish were almost entirely in deep pools with undercut banks and protruding sticks and roots. Also caught Rhinichthys osculus and Oncorhynchus mykiss.

They were of failry uniform width and stretched along about 100 m of stream. We threw back many small sticklebacks and many Rhinichthys. Also caught Rhinichthys osculus and Oncorhynchus mykiss.

Collecting Event Remarks Water temp. = 12.4 C. We began to look for a station last night and collected a few fish near weir. They were rare there so we moved toward mouth and seined among banks of pickleweed where we got 1-3 sticklebacks in most hauls. But they were mostly less than 28 mm and rare. Salinity determined with Refractometer, han (American Optical Corp, Temp compensated) to be 12 0/00. Also caught 15 Leptocottus armatus, 15 gobies, and one Platichthys stellatus.

Collecting Event Remarks Water temp. = 12.5 C. This station made by flushing fish out of weeds (broadleaf) growing against upstream side of weir with salmon ladder in middle. We saw a bullhead head just downstream. Large sticklebacks were rare with moderate number of small ones. Also caught 20 Gambusia affinis, 3 Carassius auratus, 3 Rhinichthys osculus, and 10 unidentified cyprinids.

Collecting Event Remarks Water temp. = 11 C. Sample collected in a calm spot to left (when facing downstream) of outflow. One seine haul filled 1.5 jars. Many males [Gasterosteus aculetus] with moderate nuptial coloration. Also caught 4 Oncorhynchus mykiss, 1 Catostomus santaannae, and 1 Gila orcutti.
