Water temp. = 17 C. Many males in nuptial coloration, 25-50% of large fish. A trout about 7 cm was observed eating a stickleback which was about 1/3 its size. We observed it for about 2 minutes during which it held the stickleback in its mouth head in, up to about the pelvic spines. It swam about slowly repositioning it, spat it out 3 times, and the recaptured it. When stickleback was spat out, it swam away, weakly about 10 cm from the trout which easily recaptured it. Garter snake from downstream most area was a Santa Cruz garter snake. Also numerous red legged frogs. Most sticklebacks caught in downstream area. Numerous Taricha seen. A man whose family owns this land came along and told us that he expected this part of the creek to go dry at the end of the summer, although his father had never seen it go dry in 65 years. His grandfather had seen it go dry in the 1880s. He also mentioned that Cal. Fish and Game had planted trout in the 1950s. We checked the creek about 1 mile upstream and sticklebacks were absent. Also caught Oncorhynchus mykiss. |

Specimen Remarks |
m, f, juveniles. Fixed in 10% buffered (dolomite) formalin ~1 month. |
Collecting Event Remarks |
Water temp. = 17.5 C. Fish collected in a 25 m long pool. Small trout were very abundant. Downstream from here to junction with north fork. The stream has dwindled to a series of unconnected pools. The stream appears to be drying rapidly as we saw pool 1 cm deep with fish dying from lack of water, others were already dead. Oncorhynchus mykiss. |

Water temp. = 22 C. Garter snake seen. Males (sticklebacks) in nuptial coloration. Tadpoles present. Salmo gairdneri was found dead but in good condition (52.5 cm). Dissection showed the gut was empty but that it was a gravid female in which the eggs had entered the coelom. She apparently died of heat stress or anoxia. A section of skin was collected for aging. It appears that the water level has dropped at least 15 cm. Substantial portions of the habitat have dried up and the habitat may go dry by summer's end. Also caught Oncorhynchus mykiss, Eucyclogobius newberryi, and Cottus sp. |

Water temp. = 23 C. Clemmys seen. This is another dwindling lagoon. Sticklebacks occurred strickly in aquatic grass. Sticklebacks were very rare. The volume of this habitat has decreased up to 50%. Level has dropped up to 20 cm. This habitat seems likely to go dry by rainfall period. 1 m below high water mark. Also caught Eucyclogobius newberryi and Cottus sp. |
