Collecting Event Remarks |
Water temp. = 21 C. No males in reproductive coloration, only 1 adult stickleback seined. All sticklebacks collected, many Cottus thrown back. This sample was made in the upper 100 m of the estuary, below the most downstream riffle. Most of the sticklebacks came from open water, emergent grasses, on beneath recumbent tree limbs. The estuary in this area is flat bottomed with only 1 marginal pothole against a cliff. This pothole contained only Cottus including the single large specimen seined. Platichthys also came from this hole. Dragonfly larvae absent. Also caught Cottus asper, Oncorhynchus mykiss, Leptocottus armatus, and Platichtyhus stellatus. |

Water temp. = 26 C. Males in nuptial coloration were extremely abundant. Gravid females were extremely abundant. Adult stickleback and small fry were extremely abundant. However, intermediate fish were very rare. Green heron seen landing at edge of lagoon. This is a marine estuary. It is choked in the areas seined with aquatic grass. It appears that the sticklebacks were breeding at the edges of the grass because most adult fish were seined in these areas and almost all fish were either nuptially colored males. Males with post-nuptial melanism or large females of which were gravid. Small sticklebacks were very abundant, especially within the grass. Also caught Eucyclogobius newberri. |

Water temp. = 20.5 C. All fishes were seined along the margin of a 90 m long wide spot in the creek below which the stream was dry for 40-50 m followed by pools and another shorter dry stretch. This wide spot was mostly 10-15 cm deep except along one shore where there were large slabs of concrete and twigs in water. This is where most of the fish were found. The largest and most abundant Cottus occured where the algae from one side approached the twigs on the other at the downstream end. Dragonfly naiads present and as in every station on this creek, crayfish have been abundant. Also caught Catostomus occidentalis, Cottus asper, and Oncorhynchus mykiss. |

Water temp. = 22 C. All 5 scorable fish were low plated. 4 fish came from pool from which data above is presented, all were low plated fish. 7 fish came from a small puddle just upstream <1 cm deep and about 25 cm in diameter. This puddle was drying. 1 fish from this puddle was countable and it was low morph. A belostomatid was seen with a captured water strider, but I did not see it get captured. Downstream of here is a 3 m falls and access is poor in this area. Thus it is very unlikely that sticklebacks are introduced. |

Stream gradient very high and habitat appears unsuitable for sticklebacks above this point. Sticklebacks and dace seined along 20 m of stream. Also caught Rhinichthys osculus. |

Specimen Remarks |
m, f, juveniles. Fixed in 10% buffered (dolomite) formalin ~1 month. |
Collecting Event Remarks |
Water temp. = 23.5 C. Salmo gairdneri seen but not seined. Entosphenus was told to us to be here. No males with nuptial coloration. Most fish seined from large (60 m long) pool, reaching a maximum of about 2 m deep. While collecting following potential predators were observed: belostomatid, Thamnophis couchi, trout, pair of kingfishers flew over our head. Clemmys also present. This appears to be a permanent habitat. Even after drought water marks on cliff indicate drop of no more than 10 cm and water is flowing into and out of the pool. All Cottus and a few sticklebacks were collected in a shallow (<30 cm deep) pool just downstream. Also caught Cottus asper and Lampetra tridentata. |

Collecting Event Remarks |
Water temp. = 19.5 C. Fishes were collected from series of very heterogenous pools: broad, shallow ,mud-dashed bottom. Small (3 m) or large, deep pools with large boulders or cliff faces surrounding them. Many small sticklebacks and several Cottus thrown back. Trout only with cysts in skin. Possible predators: trout, Cottus, belostomatids, kingfishers. Also caught Cottus asper and Oncorhynchus mykiss. |

Collecting Event Remarks |
Water temp. = 20 C. Fishes were collected along a 50 m long pool and a 15 m long pool immediately upstream. Typical of the area is a pool with numerous emergent cobbles and boulders with trees along the bank. Numerous small sticklebacks returned. No other fish species collected. This station is within a few hundred meters of previous one but contains completely plated sticklebacks which the previous one did not. |

Collecting Event Remarks |
Water temp. = 18 C. This is a very isolated pool along a cliff face. The stream is almost entirely dry for several hundred meters downstream. The pool is probably always in shade, accounting for the low temp and high density of sticklebacks. Enough sticklebacks were obtained in 1 seine haul for a complete sample. Some large males had poorly developed nuptial coloration. |
