Collecting Event Remarks |
Water temp. = 18 C. This is a 24 m long pool with a small inflow riffle. The level of the pool apparently had declined rapidly recently as there was much dead algae higher on bank (to 50 cm above present level) and lower banks were covered with live green filamentous algae to a height of about 35 cm. Decline in water level had caused a decrease in pool volume of 65-70% and surface area by about 50% since it stopped flowing into the next pool downstream. In a separate bottle, dead sticklebacks which were common, more collected for comparison to live sample. Numerous fish infected with Schistocephalus or ectoparasites. A green heron was seen earlier in flight near here and it attempted to return. One cobble had a large recent bird feces. Belostomatid also common. Later a dead stickleback with parallel lines on it (beak mark?) found. This pool is 100% shaded by willows until almost noon. Also caught Gila orcutti, Pimephales promelas, Gambusia affinis, and Catostomus santaanae. |

Flow into the pool, of course, had ceased. The drop in depth was 95 cm below maximum heighth when water flowed out of the pool. Racoon tracks abundant. Also caught Gambusia affinis. |

Water temp. = 20.5 C. This is a larger pool immediately upstream of the pool where previous dead sample (MAB77-82) was made. A little trickle of water enters this pool upstream and this pool used to flow into the pool where the previous dead sample was made. It does not do so now. The pool at the surface is almost completely covered with filamentous algae. Dead sticklebacks were fairly abundant but other species abundant in the pool (especially Gambusia) were not found dead. Length of this pool: 65 m. Sticklebacks unusually abundant, many thrown back. Also caught Gila orcutti, Catostomus santaanae, and Pimephales promelas. |

We did a mark using Bismarck Brown and these will be recaptured next Saturday (September 17). On September 17, returned here and there was already plenty of dead sticklebacks floating. Also caught Gila orcutti, Pimephales promelas, Gambusia affinis, and Catostomus santaanae. |

Most fish caught in vegetation where males predominate. This is the same locality as MAB77-60. Eucyclogobius were more abundant in the open areas away from vegetation. Except for 1, none were in nuptial coloration. Also caught Leptocottus armatus, Eucyclogobius newberryi, and Cottus asper. |

Water temp. = 24 C. Water is so deeply tea stained that meter stick could not be seen below 45 cm depth. This is a slough that joins Brush Creek immediately inland of a beach dunes. We did not notice this last summer and judging from abundance of sticklebacks, much of the habitat must have survived the drought. The flow from here may have caused high frequency of low plated fish in the lagoon. Tadpoles seen. Cottus thrown back, all sticklebacks kept. Also caught Leptocottus armatus, Cottus asper, Platichthys stellatus, and Oncorhynchus mykisss. |

Sticklebacks were common in the middle of the stream where current was moderate. This area was overgrown with willows and the stream choked with emergent broadleafs and algae in 1975. Now it is open due to flooding. The stream is much broader with greater discharge now. Also caught Gila orcutti. |

Shortly after we arrived, we observed water to begin flowing from upstream and the pool got deeper and possibly cooler. The minnows may represent Gila, Hesperoleucus and hybrids. One had orange-salmon colored markings on fins and head. Also caught Gila orcutti (?), Hesperoleucas symmetricus or their hybrids, and Rhinichthys osculus. |

Water temp. = 22 C. This is a check dam for irrigation that we sampled below in 1974. Sticklebacks were taken mostly below a shelf of concrete at the base of the spillway. There were mostly small Gasterosteus but a few large ones. There were a number of males with nuptial coloration (a few high) and one gravid female. There were no fry but a few fish <25 mm SL. Numerous large suckers were in the spillway. There were a number of male Pimephales with nuptial coloration. Also caught Gambusia affinis, Catostomus santaanae, Gila orcutti, and Pimephales promelas. |
