Water temp. = 16 C. Traps set along shore from boat. These Gasterosteus aculeatus were held at room temperature for about 5 days in ~7% ethanol in water which was mistakenly used instead of formalin. After 5 days, they were transferred to 10% buffered formalin. They are probably very poorly preserved. |

MAB89-16A is from creek mouth (4 traps). MAB89-16B is from the lake shore. Temperature in stream was 10°C. Depth was 35 cm and capture depth was 25 cm. Flow was very slow and the bottom was muddy with a bog-swamp shore. About 75% fish G. aculeatus and 25% small O. mykiss (introduced). Gasterosteus heavily infected with Schistocephalus solidus. No reproductives. Also in lake, high Schistocephalus infections and no reproductives. Only G. aculeatus trapped in lake. Part of MAB89-16B fixed in ethanol, a few in Brunk's solution, remainder in formalin. Also caught Oncorhynchus mykiss. |

Water temp. = 21 C. All 12 traps were set among recumbent branches in a clump of willow and alder with adjacent offshore water lilies. Trout (O. mykiss) in schools of about 50-100 fish periodically cruised through. Stickleback were seen inshore and immediately congregated around set traps. A sample of fish fixed in ethanol for otolith ageing, most in formalin. Three year classes apparent. One male had blue eyes and dorsal surface, a little red on throat. |

Water temp. = 11 C. This is a very small lake right on the north western edge of the flood plain of the Matanuska River. It discharges into a small distributary through a slow-flowing stream. Many schools of very small salmonids seen and a few sticklebacks seen (medium-sized). Nigel Russell dove in lake to look for sticklebacks; saw no fish. 75-100 Gasterosteus present in 2 size classes: large fish, complete morphs, one low nuptial male, no gravid females; and small trimorphic fish, some low nuptial males, many gravid females. The larger Gasterosteus appear to be anadromous, the smaller resident. Other species present are (in order of abundance): Oncorhynchus sp, Cottus sp, and Salvelinus. |
