Collecting Event Remarks |
Water temp. = 17.5 C. Fish collected in a 25 m long pool. Small trout were very abundant. Downstream from here to junction with north fork. The stream has dwindled to a series of unconnected pools. The stream appears to be drying rapidly as we saw pool 1 cm deep with fish dying from lack of water, others were already dead. Oncorhynchus mykiss. |

Water temp. = 22 C. Garter snake seen. Males (sticklebacks) in nuptial coloration. Tadpoles present. Salmo gairdneri was found dead but in good condition (52.5 cm). Dissection showed the gut was empty but that it was a gravid female in which the eggs had entered the coelom. She apparently died of heat stress or anoxia. A section of skin was collected for aging. It appears that the water level has dropped at least 15 cm. Substantial portions of the habitat have dried up and the habitat may go dry by summer's end. Also caught Oncorhynchus mykiss, Eucyclogobius newberryi, and Cottus sp. |

Water temp. = 22 C. All 5 scorable fish were low plated. 4 fish came from pool from which data above is presented, all were low plated fish. 7 fish came from a small puddle just upstream <1 cm deep and about 25 cm in diameter. This puddle was drying. 1 fish from this puddle was countable and it was low morph. A belostomatid was seen with a captured water strider, but I did not see it get captured. Downstream of here is a 3 m falls and access is poor in this area. Thus it is very unlikely that sticklebacks are introduced. |

Water temp. = 23.5 C. Salmo gairdneri seen but not seined. Entosphenus was told to us to be here. No males with nuptial coloration. Most fish seined from large (60 m long) pool, reaching a maximum of about 2 m deep. While collecting following potential predators were observed: belostomatid, Thamnophis couchi, trout, pair of kingfishers flew over our head. Clemmys also present. This appears to be a permanent habitat. Even after drought water marks on cliff indicate drop of no more than 10 cm and water is flowing into and out of the pool. All Cottus and a few sticklebacks were collected in a shallow (<30 cm deep) pool just downstream. Also caught Cottus asper and Lampetra tridentata. |

Typical of the area is a pool with numerous emergent cobbles and boulders with trees along the bank. Numerous small sticklebacks returned. No other fish species collected. This station is within a few hundred meters of previous one but contains completely plated sticklebacks which the previous one did not. |

Water temp. = 18 C. This is a very isolated pool along a cliff face. The stream is almost entirely dry for several hundred meters downstream. The pool is probably always in shade, accounting for the low temp and high density of sticklebacks. Enough sticklebacks were obtained in 1 seine haul for a complete sample. Some large males had poorly developed nuptial coloration. |

Water temp. = 25 C. Fish collected from a series of shallow, algae choked pools. Many small Gasterosteus thrown back. Sunfish were abundant under algae in one place and smaller species absent except small Gambusia in open water adjacent to the algae. The Gasterosteus included many small individuals but no fry. There were gravid females and nuptially colored males. One male had distinctive red coloration on anal fin. Also caught Gamusia affinis, Lapomis cyanellus, cyprinids, and Rhinichthys osculus. |

Water temp. = 18.0 C. Sticklebacks very abundant, including males and females in reproductive conditions. Females gravid but none ripe. But no newly-hatched fry seen in algae seined up. Males were bright blue with red extending as far back as cloaca. Specimens came from deeper still water against cliff face. A bag with fish bones given MAB86-6 came from about 3 m up cliff and appears to be from heron regurgitation. Also caught Cottus asper (?) and Oncorhynchus mykiss. |
