Water temp. = 19.0 C. Many truncated sticklebacks here. One nuptially colored male with red on pectoral and anal base running down to end of peduncle and onto ventral procurrent caudal rays. Worker at gravel pit said there had been a fish kill in the last month or two. G. aculeatus was very abundant and G. orcutti though less abundant was common. Water temp. = 11.5 C. This is a pool about 40 m x 100 m behind a cobblestone dam built for intake of water for Venture municipal water supply. Sticklebacks are very abundant (one haul needed) but Gila was rare, only 3 in nets. Fish in generally good condition, but no or few males with full nuptial coloration (blue background body color). Also caught Gila orcutti. |

Water Temp. = 20 C. Seining from saline portion to fresher area where Cyprinid found. Most sticklebacks [Gasterosteus aculeatus] collected over dead marine algae but also abundant among cobbles. We may have been seining across an area where freshwater met saline. Few fish in reproductive condition. Number above indicate abundance. Nearly all sticklebacks saved. Also caught in order of abundance: (1) Fundulus parvipinis, (2) Gasterosteus aculeatus, (3) Eucyclogobius newberryi, (4) Leptocottus armatus, (5) atherinid, (6) cyprinid, and (7) Gambusia affinis. |
