Water Temp. = 24.5 C. Sticklebacks were obtained mostly under willows dipping into water. This is downstream from a sewage plant, water smells foul, a tumor was seen on a stickleback. Lepomis was found nearly dead. Two varieties of snails were abundant here. Crayfish were fairly abundant. Algal growth was very well developed covering nearly entire bottom. Also caught Gila orcutti and Lepomis sp. |

Water Temp. = 27.8 C. Gasterosteus aculeatus very abundant here. They are very truncated here as near the mouth. A few Lepomis were seen but none captured. Water does not seem as foul here. Filamentous algae and Lamnaria still abundant. Most sticklebacks seined in open just where current slowed. Currents swirls in very slow eddies where most fish captured. Also caught Gila orcutti. |

Worker at gravel pit said there had been a fish kill in the last month or two. G. aculeatus was very abundant and G. orcutti though less abundant was common. Fishes collected from eddies next to current measured. Eddies were 1-3 m wide and about. Few small sticklebacks present. No sticklebacks thrown back. Also caught Gila orcutti. |

We may have been seining across an area where freshwater met saline. Few fish in reproductive condition. Number above indicate abundance. Nearly all sticklebacks saved. Also caught in order of abundance: (1) Fundulus parvipinis, (2) Gasterosteus aculeatus, (3) Eucyclogobius newberryi, (4) Leptocottus armatus, (5) atherinid, (6) cyprinid, and (7) Gambusia affinis. |

Water temp. = 18 C. This is a 24 m long pool with a small inflow riffle. The level of the pool apparently had declined rapidly recently as there was much dead algae higher on bank (to 50 cm above present level) and lower banks were covered with live green filamentous algae to a height of about 35 cm. Decline in water level had caused a decrease in pool volume of 65-70% and surface area by about 50% since it stopped flowing into the next pool downstream. In a separate bottle, dead sticklebacks which were common, more collected for comparison to live sample. Numerous fish infected with Schistocephalus or ectoparasites. A green heron was seen earlier in flight near here and it attempted to return. One cobble had a large recent bird feces. Belostomatid also common. Later a dead stickleback with parallel lines on it (beak mark?) found. This pool is 100% shaded by willows until almost noon. Also caught Gila orcutti, Pimephales promelas, Gambusia affinis, and Catostomus santaanae. |

Water temp. = 20 C. This is the last remains of the pool. An opposum track was observed in the mud at the pool's edge. Pool had dwindled to 1.8 m wide, 4 m long, 9 cm deep. Flow into the pool, of course, had ceased. The drop in depth was 95 cm below maximum heighth when water flowed out of the pool. Racoon tracks abundant. Also caught Gambusia affinis. |

Water temp. = 20.5 C. This is a larger pool immediately upstream of the pool where previous dead sample (MAB77-82) was made. A little trickle of water enters this pool upstream and this pool used to flow into the pool where the previous dead sample was made. It does not do so now. The pool at the surface is almost completely covered with filamentous algae. Dead sticklebacks were fairly abundant but other species abundant in the pool (especially Gambusia) were not found dead. Length of this pool: 65 m. Sticklebacks unusually abundant, many thrown back. Also caught Gila orcutti, Catostomus santaanae, and Pimephales promelas. |

Water temp. = 19 C. The habitat is pretty much unchanged except that flow into the pool may have decreased. We did a mark using Bismarck Brown and these will be recaptured next Saturday (September 17). On September 17, returned here and there was already plenty of dead sticklebacks floating. Also caught Gila orcutti, Pimephales promelas, Gambusia affinis, and Catostomus santaanae. |
