Aspidephorus Minding 1832:105 [ref. 3022], Asphedophorus and Aspihidophorus (Swainson 1839: 181, 272 [ref. 371]) and Aspidiphori and Aspidiphorus (Griffith & Smith 1834:140, Pl. 53 [ref. 1908]) are incorrect subsequent spellings not in prevailing usage and unavailable. Type designated by Bory de Saint-Vincent, v. 2, 1822:27 [ref. 3853] (see Whitley 1935:137 [ref. 6396]). Lacepède included cataphractus in synonymy of his A. armatus. Suppressed and placed on Official Index in Opinion 1855 to conserve Agonus.
