Genus originally spelled Paecilia. Haplochilus Agassiz 1846:29, 172 [ref. 64] is an unjustified emendation. Predated by Odontopsis van Hasselt 1823; see Roberts 1993:33 [ref. 21799]. Declared a nomen protectum by Kottelat 2013:299 [ref. 32989]. First appeared without species; species added by McClelland 1839:301 [ref. 2923].
