Current status: Valid as Arapaima Müller 1843. Arapaimidae.

On Official List (Opinion 1132); gender given as masculine by ICZN but is classically feminine. Ruled by ICZN to be available from publication in synonymy by Rüppell. Previously credited to Ehrenberg 1836:432 [ref. 5036]. •Valid as Heterotis Rüppell 1829 -- (Daget 1984:57 [ref. 6170], Lévêque et al. 1989:114 [ref. 26480], Paugy & Bénech 1989:299 [ref. 26478], Paugy in Lévêque et al. 1990:114 [ref. 21589], Poll & Gosse 1995:97 [ref. 24781], Dankwa et al. 1999:13 [ref. 28023], Hilton 2003:90 [ref. 26584], Fricke et al. 2018:28 [ref. 35805]). Sudis Cuvier [G.] 1816:180 Fem. Sudis gigas Schinz 1822. Type by subsequent monotypy. Appeared without species. Earliest addition of species probably by Schinz 1822 or Cuvier 1829:327 [ref. 995]. Objectively invalid; preoccupied by Sudis Rafinesque 1810 in fishes. Vastres Valenciennes 1846 later used for Sudis Cuvier. •In the synonymy of Arapaima Müller 1843 -- (Ferraris in Reis et al. 2003:31 [ref. 27061], Kottelat 2013:31 [ref. 32989]). 1°Homonym. Current status: Synonym of Arapaima Müller 1843. Arapaimidae.

Vastres Valenciennes [A.] in Cuvier & Valenciennes 1847:433 Masc. Vastres cuvieri Valenciennes 1847. Type by subsequent designation. Earliest type designation apparently by Jordan 1919. Treated as masculine, Art. 30.2.4. •Synonym of Arapaima Müller 1843 -- (Ferraris in Reis et al. 2003:31 [ref. 27061]). Current status: Synonym of Arapaima Müller 1843. Arapaimidae.
