Replacement for Microdus Kner 1859 (preoccupied by Microdus Nees 1812 in Hymenoptera and Microdus Emmons 1857 in fishes); on Official List, with type confirmed as M. labyrinthicus (through Microdus) by the ICZN (Opinion 1150). Spelled Caenotropis by Boulenger 1910:7 [not researched]. •Valid as Caenotropus Günther 1864 -- (Géry 1977:211 [ref. 1597], Vari 1983:5 [ref. 5419], Vari et al. 1995:12 [ref. 21817], Vari & Raredon in Reis et al. 2003:85 [ref. 27061], Scharcansky & Lucena 2007:59 [ref. 29251], Oliveira et al. 2011:11 [ref. 31685]). Current status: Valid as Caenotropus Günther 1864. Chilodidae.

Chilodus Müller [J.] & Troschel [F. H.] 1844:85 Masc. Chilodus punctatus Müller & Troschel 1844. Type by monotypy. Also published as new in Müller & Troschel 1848:634 [ref. 3072]. Genus on Official List (Opinion 1150). Family name Chilodontinae [and therefore Chilodontidae] proposed to be placed on Official List in Herbert & Bouchet 2011:175 [ref. 31588]. •Valid as Chilodus Müller & Troschel 1844 -- (Géry 1977:214 [ref. 1597], Vari 1983:5 [ref. 5419], Isbrücker & Nijssen 1988 [ref. 7319], Taphorn 1992:399 [ref. 23654], Vari et al. 1995:12 [ref. 21817], Vari & Ortega 1997:71 [ref. 22865], Vari & Raredon in Reis et al. 2003:85 [ref. 27061], Oliveira et al. 2011:11 [ref. 31685]). Microdus Kner [R.] 1858:77 Masc. Microdus labyrinthicus Kner 1858. Type by monotypy. Also appeared in Kner 1859:149 [ref. 2631]. Objectively invalid; preoccupied by Microdus Nees 1812 in Hymenoptera and Microdus Emmons 1857 in fossil fishes. Placed on Official Index, and Caenotropus Günther 1864 established as a replacement name by ICZN (Opinion 1150). •Synonym of Caenotropus Günther 1864 -- (Vari & Raredon in Reis et al. 2003:85 [ref. 27061]). 1°Homonym. Current status: Synonym of Caenotropus Günther 1864. Chilodidae.
