Objectively invalid; preoccupied by Gonostoma Rafinesque 1810 in fishes; Bleeker 1849 described as Anodontostoma, with his species hasseltii (with "Gonostoma javanicum K. v. H." in synonymy but never described by them). Apparently Hyrtl 1855 was first to technically add a species to Gonostoma van Hasselt. •Questionably in the synonymy of Anodontostoma Bleeker 1849 -- (Whitehead 1985:252 [ref. 5141]), but in any event preoccupied. • In the synonymy of Anodontostoma Bleeker 1849 -- (Kottelat 2013:58 [ref. 32989]). 1°Homonym. Leptogaster (subgenus of Clupea) Bleeker [P.] 1870:Pl. 264 Fem. Rogenia argyrotaenia Bleeker 1852 (Escualosa thoracata (Valenciennes 1847)). Type by monotypy. Appeared first as "Clupea (Leptogaster) argyrotaenia Blkr.". Jordan 1919:362 [ref. 4904] regarded as introduced in error, probably overlooked in proofreading. Whitehead et al. 1966:70 [ref. 6860] treat as a forgotten name and place in synonymy of Escualosa Whitley 1940. Correctly dates to 1870, Pl. 264 in part 22 [ref. 428], with corresponding legend page published in 1875; in corresponding text page 101 published in 1872, Bleeker used the name Clupeoides. Leptogaster is also objectively invalid, being preoccupied in insects according to Whitley 1970:242 [ref. 6601]. •Synonym of Escualosa Whitley 1940 -- (Whitehead 1985:118 [ref. 5141], Kottelat 2013:60 [ref. 32989]). Macrura van Hasselt [J. C.] 1823:329 Fem. Van Hasselt text unclear if intended as a species or genus. Regarded by Kottelat (1987:370 [ref. 5962]) as a species name; but Fowler, Whitley [refs. 4709 and 4718] and others regard as a genus, taking precedence over Hilsa Regan 1917. Whitehead 1985:220, 222 [ref. 5141] credits the genus to Fowler 1941:626 and places in synonymy of Hilsa Regan 1917 and (in part) Tenualosa Fowler 1934. Treated as valid, dating to van Hasselt -- (Kuang in Pan et al. 1991:36 [ref. 23876]). Case probably should be submitted to ICZN to conserve Hilsa. Current status: Synonym of Hilsa Regan 1917.
