Earliest type designation by Jordan 1919:306 [ref. 4904]. •Valid as Eleginops Gill 1862 -- (Stevens et al. 1984:563 [ref. 13633], Andersen 1984:23 [ref. 13369] with type as maclovinus [type of Eleginus not Eleginops], Nakamura in Nakamura et al. 1986:256 [ref. 14235], Eastman & Eakin 2000:15 [ref. 24631], Balushkin 2000:S97 [ref. 29555] in Eleginopsidae, Sanchez et al. 2007:155 [ref. 28720], Sheiko 2019:57 [ref. 37173]). Current status: Valid as Eleginops Gill 1862. Eleginopidae.

Eleginus Cuvier [G.] in Cuvier & Valenciennes 1830:158 Masc. Eleginus maclovinus Cuvier 1830. Type by subsequent designation. Objectively invalid; preoccupied by Eleginus Fischer von Waldheim 1813 in fishes, not replaced. Type species designated by Lesson 1831:202 [ref. 5776]. •Synonym of Eleginops Gill 1862 -- (Sheiko 2019:59 [ref. 37173]). 1°Homonym. Current status: Synonym of Eleginops Gill 1862. Eleginopidae.
