Leptocarias listed in synonymy and attributed to Smith (manuscript), but description of genus and species appears to be by Günther, therefore authorship solely to Günther; not technically an emendation of Leptocharias. •Objective synonym of Leptocharias Smith 1838 -- (Compagno 1973:27 [ref. 7163], Compagno 1988:202 [ref. 13488]). Current status: Synonym of Leptocharias Smith 1838. Leptochariidae.

Leptocarias Smith [A.] in Müller & Henle 1839:56 Masc. Triaenodon smithii Müller & Henle 1839. Type by monotypy. As appeared in footnote in Müller & Henle can probably be regarded as a name in synonymy of Triaenodon. Appeared first as Leptocharias Smith 1838; perhaps Müller and Henle's treatment also can be regarded as an incorrect subsequent spelling. •In the synonymy of Leptocharias Smith 1838 -- (Compagno 1973:27 [ref. 7163], Compagno 1988:202 [ref. 13488]). Current status: Synonym of Leptocharias Smith 1838. Leptochariidae.

Appeared first without species, one species added by Müller & Henle 1839:56 [ref. 3069] where genus was spelled Leptocarias. See Leptocarcharias Günther 1870 [ref. 1995]. •Valid as Leptocharias Smith 1838 -- (Compagno 1973:27 [ref. 7163], Branstetter in Whitehead et al. 1984:118 [ref. 13675], Compagno 1984:380 [ref. 6846], Bass et al. 1986:80 [ref. 5638], Compagno 1988:202 [ref. 13488], Compagno 1999:481 [ref. 25589]).
