Type information: Boeseman 1947:116 [ref. 12876]. Original genus should have been Lophotus. Spelling cepedianus based on latinization of the vernacular name "Le Lophote Cepedien." •Synonym of Lophotus lacepedei [sic, should be lacepede] Giorna 1809 -- (Palmer 1973:334 [ref. 7195], Palmer in Whitehead et al. 1986:734 [ref. 13676], Quiniou & Quéro 1990:646 [ref. 17473]). Spelling cepedii based on latinization of the vernacular name "Le Lophote Cepedien." Goldfuss (1820) cited a paper by Cuvier 1813 [ref. 26409], and Cuvier used the name "Le Lophote Cepedien, Giorna." Holotype (unique): AMS B.5776 [ex TMH [Hobart Mus.]]. Also appeared in Johnston 1883:142 [ref. 18337]. Named for A. Günther of the BMNH (named after "the author of the Fishes of the British Museum"), so the name should be spelled guentheri. •Synonym of Lophotus capellei Temminck & Schlegel 1845 -- (Paxton et al. 1989:398 [ref. 12442]). •Apparently valid as Lophotus guentheri Johnston 1883 -- (Craig et al. 2004:63 [ref. 28412]). •Valid as Lophotus guentheri Johnston 1883 -- (Roberts 2012:55 [ref. 32187] as guntheri, Sutton et al. 2020:224 [ref. 37832]). lacepede, Lophotus Giorna [M. E.] 1809:179, 180, Pl. 2 (fig. 1) [Mémoires de l'Académie impériale des sciences, littérature et beaux-arts, Turin, Sér. Sciences Physiques et Mathématiques. [v. 16] (pt 1) (for 1805-1808); ref. 1808] No types known. Appeared as "Le Lophote-Lacepede" on p. 180, with genus as "Lophote-Lophotus" on p. 179; now accepted as valid by authors, although 2 other species are treated as vernacular names in the same work. Also appeared in Cuvier 1813 [ref. 26409] and Bosc 1817:186 as "Le Lophote cépédien." Also as cepedii Schinz 1822 and Goldfuss 1820, and cepedianus Cloquet 1823. All are apparently the same species which we call Lophotus lacepede Giorna 1809.
