Four species names are listed, Sparoperca pikei Steind., S. elegans Steind., S. zonata C.V., and S. zonatus. The species zonatus apparently is Serranus zonatus Valenciennes 1830 [now Pristipomoides zonatus] (see Fricke 1999:280 [ref. 24106]). S. zonatus would be the type species if Sparoperca is regarded as available. The other species were never described and have been allocated by Fricke and correctly regarded as unavailable (name only). Even though the genus name appeared with a described species, the name Sparoperca is here (WNE) regarded as unavailable -- a name on a drawing not intended by Gudger as a valid genus name.
